Google’s chips were used by Apple to train two AI models, as shown in a research paper

Apple’s research paper didn’t explicitly mention that Nvidia chips were not used, but the description of the hardware and software setup for its AI tools and features lacked any indication of Nvidia hardware.

According to a research paper published by Apple on Monday, the company opted for chips designed by Google rather than industry leader Nvidia to construct two essential elements of its AI software infrastructure for its future AI tools and features.

Apple's decision to use Google's cloud infrastructure is significant, as Nvidia is known for producing the most sought-after AI processors.

Even with the addition of chips from Google, Amazon.com, and other cloud computing firms, Nvidia still dominates around 80% of the market.

The research paper did not explicitly mention that Apple avoided Nvidia chips, but the description of the hardware and software infrastructure for its AI tools and features lacked any reference to Nvidia hardware.

Apple had no comments on Monday.

Apple disclosed that it employed two versions of Google's tensor processing unit (TPU) to train its AI models, which are arranged in extensive chip clusters.

In creating the AI model for iPhones and other devices, Apple utilized 2,048 TPUv5p chips. Meanwhile, for their server AI model, Apple harnessed the power of 8,192 TPUv4 processors.

Nvidia, on the other hand, doesn't venture into TPUs but instead focuses on developing graphics processing units (GPUs) widely recognized for their role in AI endeavors.

While Nvidia offers its chips and systems as standalone products, Google provides access to TPUs through its Google Cloud Platform. Customers looking to purchase access need to develop software on Google's cloud platform to utilize the chips.

Apple is introducing portions of Apple Intelligence to its beta users this week.

Although Reuters mentioned the use of TPU chips in June, Apple only revealed the extent of its dependence on Google hardware in Monday's research paper.

Google and Nvidia declined to provide comments on the matter, but Apple's engineers highlighted the potential for creating even larger and more advanced models using Google's chips. At their June developer conference, Apple unveiled an array of new AI features, such as integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT technology into their software.

On Monday, the stock of the Cupertino, California-based company dipped by 0.1%, settling at $218.24 during regular trading hours.
