Sonali Verma is a talented actress best known for her iconic role as Gayatri, aka Choti Bahu, in the hit television show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. With her impressive range and ability to portray complex characters, she has made a significant impact in the Indian television industry.
Tell us about how you got started in the television industry? What inspired you to pursue acting?
My acting career started unexpectedly. After almost a decade as an entertainment and lifestyle anchor with NDTV, I relocated to Mumbai for the launch of their new channel. Acting wasn’t part of the plan, but once I arrived, numerous offers came my way. I resisted at first, until I met Mr. Jitender, who advised me to meet Ekta Kapoor. After that, I met with her, and that meeting ended up signing my first show with Balaji Telefilms.
How has your character evolved over the years? What are the most significant changes you've seen in yourself?
I believe others might be better suited to answer this question because I can only speak about myself from a biased perspective. Isn't that the truth? We tend to see only the good in ourselves, but it's those around us who truly see us as we are. So, this is a question best answered by the people who know me well.
Were you always interested in acting, or did you have other passions or career aspirations when you were younger?
I've always had a love for television. I remember watching ads and Doordarshan shows, imagining what it would be like to be in them. As a young girl, I would tell everyone that I was going to make ads when I grew up, so I guess there was always some pull towards television or creative expression. But becoming an actor? That was never the goal—it was purely destiny and a blessing.
How has being part of such a long-running and successful show impacted your life and career?
“Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai” has truly been a big blessing in my life. Many actors work for years without receiving the kind of love that we've been fortunate enough to experience from our fans. When I reflect on the impact this show has had on my life and career, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Even today, the love for the character Gayatri and the show continues. Living in New Jersey, I still get recognized on the streets of Manhattan, New York, and New Jersey, with people telling me how much they love my character and the show. That is truly what I have earned, and I couldn't be more thankful.
What kind of fan interactions do you enjoy the most? Have there been any memorable experiences with fans?
I have never encountered a fan who is rude, unkind, or unpleasant. The fans have always been warm and wonderful, with only kind things to say. Touchwood, I have never had an unkind fan interaction! However, there's one particular incident I'd like to share. This was during the time when the Singhania family had just been introduced, and we were looking for a girl for Naitik. I remember being at a parlor in Mumbai, getting my waxing done, when a lady kept insisting that I look at her daughter's *patri* (horoscope). I explained to her that it was just a show and that Naitik wasn't really my son nor was he actually getting married. But she persisted, saying, "No, no, I understand, but can you please still take the *patri*?" That was the level of emotional connection the audience had, right from the very beginning—before Akshara and Naitik even got married. People instantly connected with the show on such a deep emotional level.
What are your future plans and aspirations? Do you see yourself continuing to act in television or exploring other avenues?
An actor never truly retires from their craft. Recently, I joined Instagram at @realSonaliVerma and started a YouTube channel called *Sonali Verma, Heart and Soul*, where I post twice a week. This is my way of staying connected with my fans and continuing to do something creative with my time—now that I finally have the time! I took a long break to focus on my family, especially since my son was young, but now I feel it's the perfect moment to express my creativity through vlogging. And never say never! I don’t know when it will happen, but if God has a plan for me to return to acting, I’m sure it will work out.
How do you build chemistry with your co-stars, especially when playing romantic or family relationships?
It’s actually quite easy to create chemistry with any actor because it’s a team effort. It’s not just about the actors; it’s the writers, directors, lighting, sound, music, and camera work that all contribute to creating that chemistry. As actors, we just need to be emotionally available and understand the technical aspects of what’s required. When the scene calls for layered emotions, it’s our job to tap into those feelings. If you’re well-versed with what’s needed and can access your emotions easily, you can build chemistry with anyone. I’ve been very lucky to work with fantastic people throughout my career.
What drew you to your role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, and how did you prepare for it?
I was cast as Gayatri because the show's writer knew me and had previously wanted to collaborate with me on another project. Initially, I was approached for the role of Rajshree, but I felt a stronger connection to Gayatri. Instinctively drawn to her character, I requested to audition for Gayatri instead. Ultimately, it’s the producers, the channel, and the creative team who recognize where an actor fits, so I went through the same process as anyone else. I auditioned, completed a look test, and then I became Gayatri.
How do you approach developing a character, especially when it differs significantly from your own personality?
For me, developing a character is an enjoyable process. It starts with understanding the writer's vision—how they've conceived the character, her background, and where she comes from. Then, I collaborate with the creative team to understand the visual aspects—what she wears, how she looks, how she walks, and the choices she makes. All these details really help me shape the character. After that, I focus on the emotional aspect, figuring out how she would feel in specific scenes or when delivering certain dialogues. Ultimately, the biggest help in developing a character comes from the writer and the creative team. Once I understand their vision, it’s my job to add the emotions and bring her to life.
Have you had any creative input into your character’s storylines or development? If so, can you share an example?
As an actor, I don't interfere with the creative process of the production house. I trust that everyone involved is a perfectionist who knows their job well, and I believe in letting them do what they do best. I only offer input if something goes against my understanding of the character—that’s the only time I step in.
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has been one of the longest-running shows on television. What do you think is the secret to its success?
I believe the show's success comes from its ability to connect with people's emotions. It’s the only show I can proudly say broke the usual way Indian television is seen and presented. Every character was well-developed, and as long as I was part of it, the show did justice to each one. What made it different was that there were no typical villains or vamps with dramatic faces and makeup. It was grounded in reality, focusing on real relationships, and maybe that’s why it still resonates with people today.
OTT platforms are becoming increasingly popular. Have you considered exploring roles in web series or digital films?
I would absolutely love to be part of an OTT series or a smaller project—I'd be thrilled! However, since I'm based in New Jersey, it would need to be something filmed here. Maybe someone will create a show that shoots in America or Canada and reach out to me. Hopefully, someone reading this interview will get that idea!
