Utkarsh Baxi, who comes from Surat with advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering and an MBA, is currently an HR Business Partner at Capgemini in Bengaluru. His fortune has taken a thrilling leap as he earns a place on the hot seat for the premiere of “Kaun Banega Crorepati” Season 16.
Can you share a bit about yourself & your professional background ?
I am originally from Surat, where I completed my schooling at St. Xavier’s. I pursued electrical engineering and later earned my MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) in Mumbai. Currently, I work as an HRBP at Capgemini in Bangalore.
Can you share any notable achievements or honors you received during your academic career?
As a student, I was always eager to participate in co-curricular activities. I have won a state-level elocution competition and am a district-level carrom champion. My passion for music drives me to actively engage in vocal and instrumental training. I have also taken part in numerous quiz competitions and other events at school and college festivals.
What are some of your personal interests or hobbies outside of your professional life?
I have a deep passion for music and everything associated with it. I also enjoy discovering lesser-known scenic spots.
How did you find out about the opportunity to be on KBC? Did you apply directly, or was there an invitation?
Every year, KBC opens registrations through questions broadcast on TV, and I applied just like everyone else.

What was your experience like as a first contestant on KBC Season 16? How did you prepare for the show?
For seven long years, I had dreamed of appearing on the Hot Seat, submitting my applications year after year. I was confident that someday I would make it. To be the season's first contestant was an experience that felt almost surreal. I still recall the awe I felt stepping onto the set for the first time, with the lights and sound creating a breathtaking atmosphere. My preparation was exhaustive; I made sure to cover all necessary facts with the help of my family and friends. In the weeks leading up to the event, my conversations were solely focused on general knowledge. I did everything in my power to stay updated on current and historical events.
How did appearing on KBC impact your career or personal life? Did it open up new opportunities for you?
Being on KBC allowed me to showcase my talents—whether in music, quizzing, or personal traits—on national television. This experience has significantly boosted my confidence and provided valuable networking opportunities, as I've been receiving numerous messages since the broadcast. As for future opportunities, only time will reveal their potential, especially since people continue to reach out after watching the show on OTT platforms.
Do you have any tips for professionals on how to leverage unique experiences, like being on a popular show, for career advancement?
The key is to consistently pursue your ambitions while balancing your everyday work. This ensures that you’re ready when opportunities come your way. When you find yourself in front of a vast audience, focus on the progress you’ve made. This perspective will help you stay calm and reinforce the self-confidence necessary for success.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently during your time on the show?
I believe I could have shown more confidence on two occasions when I used lifelines, as I actually knew the answers but chose to play it safe due to the high stakes. On a lighter note, I also regret not asking AB sir to recite a memorable line from his movie Wazir.
How did you channel your passion and enthusiasm while answering questions in front of a live audience?
My primary source of passion and enthusiasm came from the belief that this moment had arrived after a long period of patience and perseverance. With countless hours invested in preparation, I had convinced myself that this was my moment and I couldn’t afford to let myself down.
Can you share a memorable moment or interaction with Amitabh Bachchan that stands out in your memory?
There are two standout moments I’d like to mention: One was when Amitabh Bachchan showed his appreciation for my music after my guitar performance, telling me to never leave music and suggesting I should start my own band. The other was when Amitabh Bachchan heard me discuss my HRBP role on the show, which allowed me to highlight the critical importance of having an HRBP within an organization.
What was your impression of Amitabh Bachchan as a host? How did his style and demeanor influence your experience on the show?
I was truly in awe of AB sir's hosting style, honed over decades in the industry. The shoot flowed seamlessly, with AB sir effortlessly putting everyone at ease on the Hot Seat. There were barely any retakes, as he instinctively knew how to handle every situation. His approach made me feel as though I was simply having a conversation with a friend.
How did you feel when Amitabh Bachchan addressed you or acknowledged your performance? Did it affect your confidence or mindset during the game?
When I answered the 10th question using 'Dugnastra,' AB sir praised me for making the best use of it. This boosted my confidence significantly for the rest of the game. I also managed to answer the 12th question without a lifeline and received further praise from him. In the midst of all this, after my music performance, AB sir personally praised my singing and guitar abilities, which made me incredibly happy.
How did you feel when you first appeared on television as a contestant on KBC? What were your initial reactions and emotions?
Before the broadcast, I mainly focused on my emotions as I first arrived on set. The pivotal moment for me was when I answered the Fastest Finger First question correctly. Although I knew I was only moments away from taking my seat, I was left speechless at that time.
Since the telecast, I’ve received a great deal of recognition and never expected to see my results pop up in a Google search. I’ve given several interviews, and occasionally people recognize me when I’m out and about in my city. It’s especially notable since I’m the first contestant from Surat to appear as the season’s first Hot Seat participant on KBC.
What motivates you to keep striving towards your goals, both personally and professionally?
The sky is the limit! I view everything that has happened over the past month as just the beginning, with many more achievements ahead. This mindset drives me to pursue my goals with even greater determination. The recognition and culmination of my KBC journey mark only the first step. Now, I remind myself to double down on discipline and dedication, as my personal stakes have risen.
