Airtel is leading the charge in India by becoming the first telecom company to successfully deploy both Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G networks. This groundbreaking achievement comes after Airtel re-farmed its mid-band spectrum, setting a new standard in the telecommunications industry.
Bharti Airtel announced on Monday that it is re-farming its mid-band spectrum (1800, 2100, 2300 MHz bands) to enhance 5G coverage across India. Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer of Bharti Airtel, noted, “With the increasing adoption of our 5G services by customers, we have re-farmed our mid-band spectrum, previously utilized for 4G services.”
"As a result, we are now equipped to introduce standalone technology. This advancement will position Airtel as the first network in India capable of functioning in both standalone and non-standalone modes, thereby ensuring we deliver the finest market experience,” Sekhon stated.”
"The company successfully piloted seamless standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) switching on its 5G network in Rewari, Chennai, and Bhubaneswar to accommodate the exponential increase in 5G traffic.
Airtel also confirmed its collaboration with smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop combined NSA and SA binaries with carrier aggregation functionality, which allows smartphones to seamlessly switch between NSA and SA 5G networks."
Airtel's 5G network was initially limited to non-standalone standards. With this new development, Airtel has become the first telecom provider in the country to offer both standalone and non-standalone 5G networks.
Currently, only Jio offers a standalone (SA) 5G network, which is superior to non-standalone (NSA) 5G by providing higher download speeds and lower network latency.
