Aiswariya Nagammal | Founder of Ayurblends | Entrepreneur | Interview With TheTalkStreet

Aiswariya Nagammal is the Founder and Chief Formulator of Ayur Blends, a Chennai-based Ayurvedic beauty and wellness brand dedicated to creating safe, effective, and naturally derived skincare and haircare solutions. With a background as an industry chemist and a deep-rooted passion for traditional self-care practices passed down from her mother, she has successfully combined Ayurvedic wisdom with modern cosmetic science to develop a diverse range of products focused on holistic beauty and wellness.

A certified formulator from Formula Botanica, UK, Aiswariya has developed over 50 beauty and personal care products while mentoring more than 400 aspiring formulators. Under her leadership, Ayur Blends has grown from a small venture serving friends and family in 2019 to a recognized brand known for its commitment to authenticity, innovation, and self-care. Today, she is on a mission to build a ₹100 crore Ayurvedic beauty brand while empowering others through education, formulation expertise, and entrepreneurship.

TTS ICon  Can you tell us a little about your background and the journey that eventually led you to entrepreneurship?

I didn't always know what the word "entrepreneur" meant, but I’ve always acted like one. Growing up, I was obsessed with the natural skincare remedies we made at home. Where others just saw quick fixes, I saw science, chemistry, and magic.

That childhood curiosity eventually became a full-blown passion. I spent years studying herbs, natural oils, and how to properly formulate skincare. What started as a hobby—just making products for myself—quickly turned into a bigger mission: I wanted to bring traditional Ayurvedic secrets into the modern world.

In 2019, I finally took the leap and started Ayurblends. What began as a tiny, home-based project has grown into an official, certified manufacturing company. Today, we have over 50 products and ship to customers all over India and the world, including the US, Singapore, and South Africa. For me, the goal has always been simple: taking ancient wisdom and making it work for modern life.

TTS ICon  Your journey started with learning traditional self-care practices from your mother. Can you tell us how those early experiences shaped your vision for Ayur Blends?

Everything I know about Ayurveda started with my mother. Growing up, I used to watch her make herbal oils, face packs, and wellness remedies using simple things found in nature. There were no fancy bottles or clever advertisements—just pure knowledge passed down through generations.

The most amazing part was that her remedies actually worked. They fixed real issues because she knew exactly how to combine the right ingredients.

Those early days became the backbone of Ayurblends. My goal has always been to keep those traditional recipes exactly as they were meant to be, but give them a modern upgrade using clean manufacturing and scientific testing. In a lot of ways, Ayurblends is my way of honoring the wisdom my mother taught me at home.

TTS ICon  Back in 2019, your first customers were friends and family. At what point did you realize Ayur Blends had the potential to become a serious business?

The moment everything changed for me wasn't when we hit a big sales target. It was when the reviews started rolling in. When people I didn't even know began buying from us again and again—and telling their friends to do the same—I realized we were doing something right.

Our customers weren't just buying bottles; they were sharing their real-life results and trusting us with their skin. Seeing the business grow naturally like that proved to me that people really wanted honest, high-quality Ayurvedic products. That was the exact moment I stopped looking at Ayurblends as a fun hobby and started treating it as a real brand that could help people on a massive scale.

TTS ICon  How was Ayur Blends initially funded, and what were the biggest financial challenges during the early stages?

We built Ayurblends entirely with our own savings—no outside investors, no huge bank loans. In the beginning, every single rupee mattered. Every bit of profit we made went right back into the business to buy better ingredients, improve our recipes, and get better packaging.

Our biggest struggle wasn’t just the tight budget; it was growing without losing our high quality. As more people started buying, it was really hard to keep making small, careful batches with top-tier ingredients while keeping an eye on our bank balance. But that struggle taught us how to be smart with money. It forced us to build a solid foundation before trying to get too big, and that careful mindset still guides us today.

TTS ICon  Approximately how many products does Ayur Blends offer today, and which categories have seen the strongest customer response?

Today, we make more than 50 different products for your skin, hair, body, and overall wellness. While we love all of them, our haircare line has easily become the absolute heart of our brand. People today want hair solutions that are rooted in old traditions but made smartly for modern life, and that is exactly what we do.

Our absolute superstar product is the Hibiscus Thaali Shampoo. We make it using an old, traditional process called the Kwatha method. It takes a lot of time because we have to slowly boil down the herbs to extract every single bit of their natural goodness before mixing the shampoo. Customers completely love it because it genuinely cleans, feeds, and protects their hair without any shortcuts. Its success proves to us every day that these ancient methods still beat modern shortcuts.

TTS ICon  Many brands claim to be natural. How do you ensure authenticity and transparency in your products?

For us, being "authentic" isn't just a buzzword we use to sell products—it is how we run our entire factory. We care deeply about where our ingredients come from, how we process them, and being 100% open with our customers about what is inside every bottle.

We work closely with trusted farmers to source many of our herbs, and we often bring in ingredients fresh right when we need them for production. As an AYUSH-certified brand, we hold ourselves to very high standards from start to finish. We truly believe that our customers deserve the truth. Trends come and go, but being honest and transparent is what builds real, long-lasting trust.

TTS ICon  As both founder and chief formulator, how do you balance scientific innovation with traditional Ayurvedic wisdom?

To me, science and Ayurveda aren't enemies—they are a team. Ayurveda gives us hundreds of years of real, working wisdom, while modern science helps us understand why these ingredients work so well and how to get the absolute best out of them.

When we create a product, we don't just guess. We look at the active parts of the plants, how different ingredients interact, and how to keep the product fresh and safe—all while completely respecting the original, traditional recipes. We aren't trying to replace Ayurveda with science. We are using science to give Ayurveda a massive upgrade.

TTS ICon  Can you walk us through your product development process from concept to final launch?

At Ayurblends, we don't create products just for the sake of it—we create them to solve problems. We start by researching the best natural ingredients, blending ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern cosmetic science.

Before anything gets launched, it goes through a long testing phase. We run trials, check shelf life, and listen closely to customer feedback to make the formula perfect. We care about quality, not speed. We only launch a product when we are 100% sure it delivers great results and meets our highest standards.

TTS ICon  Which Ayur Blends product has received the most unexpected customer response?

Our absolute superstar is, without a doubt, our Hibiscus Thaali Shampoo. We always knew it was a special recipe, but we never expected it to get this much love or create such a loyal fan base.

What makes it so different is how we make it. We use an old-school technique called the Kwatha method, which means we slowly boil down the herbs to catch all their natural strength. Customers constantly tell us that using it feels just like the traditional hair remedies their grandmothers used to make, but with the ease of a modern bottle. The amazing response taught us something important: people aren't just buying shampoo; they are looking for real heritage, authenticity, and a true story. It proves that ancient wisdom can still win in today's market.
